A Maryland Way of Life Since 1904.

Strength. Stability. Longevity.

While much has changed since the Keelty family built their first home over 100 years ago, one thing will forever remain the same: our commitment to building a variety of exceptionally crafted homes in only the best locations. We believe a strong sense of community is the key to healthy living on many levels – from the family structure and the environment, to local commerce, and beyond. Perhaps that is what has made The Keelty Company one of Maryland’s premier building partners since 1904.

First New Homes on Calvert Street

In 1904, a 35-year old Irish stonemason named James Keelty built a few homes on Calvert Street near where Mercy Medical Center stands today. Then he constructed several houses on Greenmount Avenue near the future site of Oriole Park, the home field of Baltimore’s early 20th century minor-league baseball team, before moving west on Fayette and Baltimore Streets and into the Poplar grove section of the city.

In 1922, Keelty and his company, James Keelty builder, took his trademark “Daylight Colonial” rowhome – so dubbed for a design that provided a window in each room – further west, building row after row of homes on Edmonson Avenue. The neighborhood Keelty created over the next 20 years, Edmonson Village, helped to define the look of Baltimore’s suburbs, and the church he constructed there in 1928 – St. Bernardine’s Roman Catholic Church, named in memory of his deceased daughter – helped build a community that stands today.

Keelty bought it and began constructing Rodgers Forge, one of North Baltimore’s first suburban townhome communities. He completed about 600 homes before World War II halted construction.

The Keelty Company Yesterday

As a young man, James Keelty migrated from Ireland and settled in Baltimore, where he became a stonemason. In 1904, he began building homes, first on Calvert Street, and then at the site of the former Orioles baseball park. In 1932, Keelty began constructing Rodger’s Forge, one of Baltimore County’s first suburban townhome communities.

In 1946, James Jr. and his younger brother Joseph, went on to complete their father’s vision for Rodgers Forge before building homes deeper into Baltimore County’s growing suburbs. The Keelty Company has blazed a trail of new home communities throughout the state, including Mays Chapel Village, Doncaster Village and Mays Chapel North, some of the most successful planned communities in Maryland and the blueprint for planned communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Today Keelty is a fourth-generation, family owned and family-operated company with an innate understanding of regional design and lifestyle preferences.
